sewing class

So, I got a sewing machine for my birthday, and today is my second sewing class. So far I've only learned how to sew in a straight (well, sort of straight) line. I'm thinking that my first project will be some simple panels for my bedroom. But I'm kind of scared to get started. What if I buy some really pretty material and screw it up? Well, I guess I'll never know until I try.
I'm also excited because my sewing machine also does embroidering. I haven't even attempted that yet, but that class will be in a few weeks. I can't wait to start giving everyone I know something monogrammed. Anyway, not much is going on this week, so I thought I'd just let you in on what I've been doing.

  • My mom is going to teach me how to sew. She has made some precious jon jons for Will and she said I could easily do them, so we will see. Good luck with that. Also the Children's Corner in Nashville have precious patterns and fabrics for children. You may have already heard of it.

  • Sewing is a wonderful skill to have. I think you will have fun with it. I took a 2 yr sewing course in highschool and even got college credit for it. One of the best things I ever did! I haven't made anything since James arrived but I will soon get started on a quilt for our baby girl that will be arriving. I made one for James and I can't leave her out. Happy sewing! (I start knitting classes this week, it should be interesting to say the least! It will be in Portuguese and I won't know these words for sure. Oh, the adventures of living in another country! :)

  • Good luck!! I hope your classes turn out better than mine. I've made one blanket that didn't turn out with the straight sides I was hoping for. Then I tried to make a skirt with a draw string for Jamaica. It was a little painted on so no successful sewing projects for me yet : )

  • I got a sewing machine for my b-day last year...or was it 2 years ago? :)
I made some table clothes, curtains, etc. for my classroom with cheap fabric, but I'm like you. I'm too scared to try it on real fabric! I've had some cute brown/pink and brown/baby blue fabric in the floor of my closet since I got the machine. I got it out once but chickened out before I made any actual stitches! Oh, to be brave!

  • I would LOVE to learn, too! Nate's mom just got an awesome sewing machine for Christmas that also does monograming, so I am excited to start getting all kinds of stuff with my initials! :)

  • I confess I am so jealous of this machine! I want a machine that does monograming and such soo bad. I can not wait for you to finish these classes, tell me how great the machine is and then help me talk Mark into it. :)

Make some practice panels first with fabric in the remenants bin. you can get great quality fabric for next to nothing. Or go ahead and do the real thing. The worst that can happen is you rip out the seam and start over.

  • I want to learn how to sew also. I just haven't gone to sign up for the classes yet. I have some other committments right now but as soon as they are over I am going to learn to sew, at least a button.
